On 3/6/2007 we received a NEW Sharp R-530ES 2-Cubic-Foot 1200-Watt Microwave from Sharp Electronics. It is exactly the same as the one we had a problem with. The defective microwave is being sent to their evaluation center to be taken apart and examined. I also enclosed the shattered glass turntable and the towel that caught fire when it touched the glass turntable. The unit has a very bad burn smell inside it. We are pleased with the outcome of this complaint and especially pleased that they will be evaluating the microwave for manufacturing defects. After the incident it was removed and was not used again. We were afraid to use it.
I hope that they will let us know the results of their evaluation.
On 3/21/07 I filed a complaint with the BBB against Sharp Electronics and on 3/29/07 they called me and said they were sending us a new unit.
On Tuesday, 3/13/2007, my husband put tomato sauce in a PYREX brand clear bowl in the microwave to heat it and set it for 3 minutes. At the end of 1 minute he smelled smoke and it was the microwave!! The glass turntable had heated up so hot that the glass carousel shattered and when he touched it with a kitchen towel , the towel burned and caught fire. The PYREX bowl was cool and the sauce was cold. The house filled with smoke and smelled for 4 days.I was concerned that it was an internal flaw in the unit and others would do the same to other consumers.
I called SHARP immediately and told them what happened and gave them model number and the details of what happened and they said they would get back to me.THEY SAID NOT TO USE THE UNIT. They called again the following day ( Wednesday ,3/14 )and asked more questions and then again on Thursday 3/15 they called again. They kept me informed and on Friday March 16, 2007, they called again to tell me SHARP would do nothing and basicly didn't care what happened to us or the microwave. They didn't even offer us a new glass turntable to replace the broken one. I pulled the unit out and will not use it again, but SHARP does not stand by their products. We were treated badly and like we didn't matter at all. We are very upset at the way they handled it. They didn't care at all that this model could pose a danger to others that own it. I thought they would want the unit to take it appart to see why this happened, but they couldn't have cared less about what happened.
This was the 3rd SHARP cubic foot microwave for us in 3 years. The first started making an electrical noise 2 days after we had it a year and the second did the same at a little more than a year old. Then we bought this one at Amazon. All were 2 cubic feet and 1200 watts and expensive microwave ovens. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment (1)

BAD!, December 25, 2005 By JCCOURT "jimcwashdc" (Washington, DC USA) This review is from: Sharp R-530ES 2-Cubic-Foot 1200-Watt Microwave, Stainless Steel and Black (Kitchen) Our first one showed up badly damaged and Amazon did a great job getting a new one to us straight away. The second one never worked, it sounded like a tank and then just died. Stay away! Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment

Bought 2 reconditioned units from other vendors and both were defective. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment

We bought a second identical unit and the opener latch stopped working after three years of use. We like the unit when it's operational, but the quality just isn't worth the price. After researching the Internet, there are comparable units by GE for less than $200, so we'll give them a try. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment

I love the features and it works well, but both of the ones we bought died within about 3-4 years. They both went the same way. We turned them on one day and saw flashes of light inside the microwave and heard popping sounds followed by that burned electrical smell. At least they're consistent. Was this review helpful to you? (I bought the built-in installation kit elsewhere.) Like my previous Sharp, this thing is *powerful*. It cuts the cooking time listed on the instructions for most microwave items by half or close to it. The defrost mode is excellent. Having a carousel makes cooking more even.
All in all, it would be hard to find a better microwave at anywhere near this price point or even significantly above it. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment

HOLBROOK "bellejasmine" (Charleston SC) This review is from: Sharp R-530ES 2-Cubic-Foot 1200-Watt Microwave, Stainless Steel and Black (Kitchen) Beautiful appearance, worked great for a while, then began to vibrate and make loud noises and finally "died" after a year or so of minimal use. Would not recommend if you plan to use it more than a year or so. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: nice microwave, May 3, 2009 By C. C. Cameron "we all want change- create you... (Western NY) This review is from: Sharp R-530ES 2-Cubic-Foot 1200-Watt Microwave, Stainless Steel and Black (Kitchen) I'm a fan of Sharp microwaves. This is my third one. I got my first in 1988, it lasted until 1999. I got my second in 1999 and it lasted until 2009. I expect my next microwave review to take place in 2019.
This microwave has plenty of power to heat quickly, yet the sensor reheat function is fantastic. Put in a plate or a bowl, hit sensor reheat and voila! perfectly heated food. I didn't expect this feature to work so well, but i find i use it all the time. Aside from that, it's easy to clean and pretty quiet. I'm not a fan of handles on microwaves so I'll recommend it as easy to clean as well. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment

Freehill (Highland Haven, Tx) This review is from: Sharp R-530ES 2-Cubic-Foot 1200-Watt Microwave, Stainless Steel and Black (Kitchen) This microwave oven is an almost exact replacement for my old oven that I purchased seven years ago. The open/close button failed on my old oven and I needed an exact replacement to fit into the exact opening space above my double ovens. This microwave oven is tops! Fast and easy to use. Unfortunately I fixed the open/close button rather easily so now I have two very good microwave ovens. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment
4 of 5 people found the following review helpful: Poor choice, April 3, 2009 This review is from: Sharp R-530ES 2-Cubic-Foot 1200-Watt Microwave, Stainless Steel and Black (Kitchen) This is the third Sharp microwave (all this model) that I have purchased.
The ONLY reason I have done this is that I have a built-in kit above a stove unit that only fits thus particular microwave unit. Don't buy one. Was this review helpful to you? YesNo Report abuse | Permalink Comment Comment (1)
